Myth Busting

Top 10 Rodent Control Myths

These common beliefs lead homeowners and renters to delay action and repeat half measures.

  • Myth 1: I don't see rodents, so they aren't there. Rodents are nocturnal and hide. Droppings, gnaw marks and night noises show up long before a sighting.
  • Myth 2: Clean homes don't get rodents. Cleanliness helps, but openings and nearby food sources are what let them in.
  • Myth 3: One mouse is nothing to worry about. Mice breed fast. One sighting often means more behind the walls.
  • Myth 4: Traps alone will solve it. Traps remove animals but do nothing about the openings they came through.
  • Myth 5: Cats keep rodents away. A cat may catch one now and then, but it does not seal a foundation.
  • Myth 6: Poison is the fastest fix. Bait can leave animals dying inside walls, and it needs to stay in locked stations.
  • Myth 7: Ultrasonic devices work. The evidence for them is weak, and rodents often get used to them.
  • Myth 8: Rodents only come in winter. Cold pushes mice indoors, but rats stay active across the seasons.
  • Myth 9: Steel wool fills any hole. It can rust or get pulled out. Use chew proof materials, sealed properly.
  • Myth 10: It's the neighbor's problem. Rodents do not respect property lines. Shared walls and yards mean shared pressure.

The deeper explanations live in our guides: what actually works against Omaha rats, how to read the warning signs, and the pest control answers library.

Quick Reference Checklists

  • Prevention basics: hard sided trash cans, no overnight bags at the curb, no outdoor pet food, foundation lines kept clear of clutter and dense plantings.
  • Inspection checklist: check under sinks, behind the stove, around pipe penetrations, along the foundation, and at every door sweep, once a quarter.
  • Species ID: larger capsule shaped droppings point to rats, small rice sized pointed droppings point to mice. Location and size tell you which program you need.
  • Seasonal advice: pressure peaks in fall as temperatures drop. Book rodent exclusion in late summer, before the move indoors.
Why Act Early

Protect Your Home Before It's Too Late

Rodents can damage property and create health risks for your family. A professional inspection can save you time, money, and stress.

A problem caught at the "one mouse" stage is far easier to solve than an established infestation. Waiting grows the treatment scope, the contamination cleanup and the damage to wiring and insulation. Start with an inspection, get the honest report, and decide from there.

Pests don't wait. Neither do we.
